Shopify Checkout Not Working? 9 Causes and How to Fix Each One

September 30, 20268 min read

When Shopify checkout stops working, it's almost always one of three things: Shopify itself is having an outage, your store isn't set up to take payments (no paid plan, payment provider, or shipping rate), or something on your storefront (a theme change, an app, or an overlay) is stopping customers from reaching checkout. Work through the causes below in order. The first three take under two minutes to rule out.

Quick answer: check these first

  • Is Shopify down? Check shopifystatus.com for a Checkout incident.
  • Seeing "Checkout isn't available"? Your store is usually on a free trial without a paid plan, or has no payment method set up.
  • Button does nothing? Something on your storefront is blocking it: a theme or app script error, or an overlay covering the button on mobile.
  • Customer says "no shipping available"? Their address isn't covered by any shipping zone.

Step 1: Find out exactly where checkout fails

Before changing anything, reproduce the problem yourself. "Checkout isn't working" can mean four very different failures, and each one points to a different cause:

The checkout button does nothing when tapped

Almost always a storefront problem: a JavaScript error from your theme or an app, or an invisible element sitting on top of the button. See causes 5–8.

Checkout loads, then shows "Checkout isn't available"

A store configuration problem: plan, payment provider, or store status. See causes 2–3.

Checkout loads but customers can't finish (no shipping options, payment declined)

Shipping zones, markets, or payment settings. See cause 4.

It redirects back to the homepage or cart

Either a Shopify incident (cause 1) or cart contents that became unavailable, such as a sold-out variant or a product not sold in the customer's market.

Test in a private/incognito window, on your phone as well as desktop, with a real product in the cart. Many checkout bugs only affect first-time visitors or mobile users, so testing while logged in to your admin on a laptop can hide them.

The 9 causes, in the order to check them

1

Shopify is having a platform incident

Check first
If checkout broke suddenly for every customer and you changed nothing, open shopifystatus.com and look at the Checkout component. Shopify has had incidents where customers clicking Checkout were sent back to the homepage. If there's an active incident, there's nothing to fix on your side. Wait for Shopify to resolve it and don't start reinstalling apps or editing your theme.
2

Your store is on a free trial or has no active plan

Most common for new stores
The "Checkout isn't available. Return to the home page or contact the store directly" message usually means checkout is switched off because the store has no paid plan: it's still on the trial, the plan was paused, or a bill failed. In your admin, go to Settings → Plan, pick a plan, and make sure your billing details are valid. Checkout starts working as soon as the plan is active.
3

No payment provider is set up (or it was deactivated)

Go to Settings → Payments. You need Shopify Payments or a third-party provider active and fully verified. If Shopify Payments asked for extra verification (identity or bank details) and you missed the email, payouts and sometimes checkout can be restricted until you complete it.
4

Shipping zones or markets don't cover the customer

If a customer reaches checkout but sees no shipping options, or can't continue after entering an address, their country or region isn't in any shipping zone (Settings → Shipping and delivery), or the product isn't sold in their market (Settings → Markets). Test with the exact address the customer used, not your own.
5

A theme update or code edit broke the cart

Most common for live stores
The checkout button lives in your theme's cart page or cart drawer. After a theme update, a switch to a new theme, or a developer's edit, the button can stop submitting. To isolate it: in Online Store → Themes, preview an unedited copy of your theme (or the latest version of Dawn) and try checking out from the preview. If checkout works there, the problem is in your live theme's code.
6

An app is conflicting with the cart or checkout button

Cart drawer apps, upsell and "frequently bought together" apps, currency converters, and discount apps all inject code into the cart. A conflict between two of them, or an app update, can leave the checkout button dead. In the theme editor, open App embeds and switch them off one at a time, testing checkout after each. Uninstalling doesn't always remove leftover code, so check your theme files too if you removed an app recently.
7

Something invisible is covering the checkout button on mobile

Cookie banners, chat widgets, email popups, and "sticky" add-to-cart bars can sit on top of the checkout button on small screens, so taps land on the overlay instead. The page looks fine but the button won't respond. In our scan of 10 Shopify stores doing $1M+ in revenue, one store's cookie banner was blocking the entire shopping cart on mobile, and the owner had no idea. This is exactly the kind of bug you only find by testing at phone sizes.
8

Old checkout customizations stopped working

Shopify retired checkout.liquid in favor of Checkout Extensibility (checkout UI extensions and apps like Checkout Blocks) through 2024 and 2025. If your checkout used to have custom code, such as extra fields, scripts, or tracking, those customizations may have stopped running or be misbehaving. Review Settings → Checkout → Customize and check any checkout apps' status pages.
9

The products in the cart can't be sold

If an item sold out, was set to Draft, or isn't available on the Online Store sales channel or in the customer's market, checkout can bounce the customer back or show an error. Check the product's status, inventory, and sales channel availability, and whether "Continue selling when out of stock" should be on.

Shopify checkout not working on iPhone only

If checkout works on desktop but not on iPhone, it's almost never Shopify's checkout itself (the hosted checkout is heavily tested on iOS). Look at what your storefront does on small screens: an overlay or sticky bar covering the button (cause 7), a cart drawer script that fails in Safari, or a popup that traps the page. Test in Safari on a real iPhone, and in Chrome on Android, before assuming it's a device problem on the customer's side.

How to stop checkout breaking silently

The painful part of checkout bugs isn't fixing them. It's the days of lost sales before anyone notices. Most store owners find out from a customer email, or from a sudden drop in orders.

Three habits prevent most of it: test checkout on your phone after every theme update or app install; keep a duplicate of your theme before any edit so you can roll back in one click; and run an automated scan that checks your cart and checkout path at mobile, tablet, and desktop sizes.

What BugSense checks: it loads your homepage, product pages, cart, and checkout entry at 375px mobile, 768px tablet, and 1920px desktop sizes, and flags JavaScript errors, failed requests, and buttons that are covered or broken. It can't place a real order, so still do a test purchase after big changes. Run a free scan. No account needed.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Shopify checkout not working?

The most common causes are a Shopify platform incident (check shopifystatus.com), a store without an active paid plan or payment provider, shipping zones that don't cover the customer, or a storefront problem such as a theme update, an app conflict, or a mobile overlay covering the checkout button.

What does "Checkout isn't available" mean on Shopify?

It usually means checkout is disabled for the store, most often because the store is on a free trial or has no active paid plan, or because no payment method is set up. Choosing a plan in Settings → Plan and activating a payment provider fixes it in most cases.

Is Shopify checkout down right now?

Check shopifystatus.com, Shopify's official status page. It shows live incidents for Checkout, Admin, Storefront and other components. If there is no incident and only your store is affected, the cause is in your store's settings, theme or apps.

Why does my Shopify checkout button do nothing?

A checkout button that doesn't respond is almost always a storefront issue: a JavaScript error from your theme or an app, or another element such as a cookie banner, chat widget or sticky bar sitting on top of the button on mobile. Test with app embeds disabled and on a real phone.

Why is Shop Pay or checkout not working for some customers only?

If only some customers are affected, compare what they have in common: country (shipping zones and markets), device (mobile overlays or Safari-specific script errors), or products (sold-out variants or items not available in their market).
