Shopify setup guide

How to install BugSense from the Shopify App Store, run theme scans, and manage your subscription.

01

Create your BugSense account

  • Go to bugsense.app and sign up for a free account. Your 7-day free trial starts right away, no credit card required.
  • Once signed in, go to the Websites page and click "Add Website", or go directly to bugsense.app/onboarding.
02

Install BugSense from the Shopify App Store

  • Open the BugSense listing at apps.shopify.com/bugsense and click Install. Shopify will prompt you to choose the store to install on.
  • Approve the requested scopes. BugSense requests read access to your theme files and store info — it never modifies your store.
  • You'll land inside Shopify Admin → Apps → BugSense with your store already connected. From there you can run your first scan and start the 7-day free trial.
03

Run your first scan

  • Click "Scan now" on your store's website card. BugSense launches a headless browser against your live storefront with no credentials or code changes required.
  • The scan checks across Mobile, Tablet, and Desktop viewports for layout issues, broken images, slow load times, and conversion-killing UI bugs.
  • Results appear in 60–90 seconds. Each issue includes a plain-English description and an AI-suggested fix (exact CSS or copy change).
04

Enable Theme Change Shield

  • On Pro and Agency plans, BugSense watches for theme publishes using a Shopify webhook.
  • When you (or a developer) publishes a theme change, BugSense triggers a scan within minutes.
  • If the change introduced a new high-severity issue, you get an alert before customers see it.
05

Billing

  • Billing is handled through BugSense directly — your subscription is managed on bugsense.app, not through your Shopify invoice.
  • Your 7-day free trial gives you full access to the plan you choose. No charge until the trial ends.
  • Manage, upgrade, or cancel your plan anytime from Settings → Billing & store → Manage subscription.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I install BugSense?

Install BugSense from the Shopify App Store at apps.shopify.com/bugsense. The install runs through Shopify's standard OAuth flow and BugSense opens inside Shopify Admin → Apps with your store already linked.

Does BugSense modify my theme?

No. BugSense only reads your theme files to analyze them. It never writes to your store, modifies your theme, or affects your storefront in any way.

What Shopify permissions does BugSense need?

BugSense requests read_themes (to fetch theme files for analysis) and read_content (to read your store info). No write permissions are requested.

Can I use BugSense on a development store?

Yes. You can connect any store including development stores. Scans run against the live storefront URL, so your theme needs to be published to see results.

How do I disconnect my store?

Go to Settings → Billing & store → Shopify Store and click "Uninstall in Shopify Admin". This opens Shopify Admin where you can revoke the app's access. Your BugSense account and scan history remain intact.

My store scan shows issues on pages I didn't set up

BugSense scans the live storefront starting from the homepage and follows common navigation paths (product pages, collection pages, cart). This is intentional — real customers visit those pages too.
